Ceramics
Open Studio Time:
- Moday and Friday 10:00 am - 8:45 pm
- Wednesday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
- Thursday 10:00 am - 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Toss your troubles aside by "throwing" some clay in the Ceramics Studio. The Ceramics Studio features:
- 9 wheels: 1 kick wheel, 6 Shimpo electric wheels, 1 Brent rehabilitation wheel and 1 Brent electric wheel.
- 2 electric oxidation kilns
- Stoneware and porcelain clays, slips and glazes
- An extruder
- A grinding wheel
- All the tools you will need
All you have to do is provide the inspiration and motivation. The Ceramics Studio provides a great atmosphere for kids and their parents to join in activities and have some fun together. The studio is set up in a "self-help" environment. There are, however, ceramic workshops offered throughout the year.
Clay must be purchased in the Craft Shop.
Prices are:
- 2.5 lbs. $3.00
- 10 lbs. $10.00
Display Cases
The Craft Shop staff will assist University organizations in the scheduling of space for the large display areas within the Student Center. Exhibit categories are Fine Art, Informative or Open Forum (for social comment). There are also spaces available in the Roman Room (1st floor) for banners to be hung.
Group Activities
Groups may plan their own workshops, activities, and birthday parties. Try your hand at candle making, tie-dye, glass bead making, macramé, wax hands, silk-screening, hula hoops, scrap wood sculptures, and ceramics. Call 618.453.3636 or 618.453.5209 for more information or to schedule dates.
Instruction by Appointment
Personal instruction for knitting, crocheting, simple silk-screening, simple sewing, mat cutting and other projects is available at $10.00 per half hour.
Matting and Framing
The Craft Shop's Matting and Framing Service can help provide you with a clear picture of the Craft Shop's capabilities. The experienced staff can work with you as much or as little as you like. A complete range of framing and matting resources can also be purchased if you would rather do it yourself. Glass, plexiglass and a large assortment of solid wood frame styles and finishes are available to help you design the custom frame that best fits your needs. Framing is available for posters, paintings, pictures and anything else you might desire to hang.
Private Music Lessons
Voice
Learn to develop your natural talent. Sing, listen and learn from popular music. Beginning and intermediate levels.
Guitar
These lessons are designed for those who prefer not to meet in a classroom situation or are advanced beyond the beginning level.
Piano
Learn to read music and play the piano. Private lessons are for beginning and intermediate level participants.
Other Private Lessons
We offer private lessons in most of the workshop areas offered above. Lessons are available mornings, afternoons and evenings depending on the availability of the instructors. They are open to all ages. Please contact the Craft Shop for an appointment.
Cost: $10.00 per half-hour
Paint Bar
The Craft Shop's Paint Bar may just be the best bar in town. Each semester, the Paint Bar offers workshops, stained glass projects and jewelry making. There's also plenty of room to work on banners, stained glass, paper making, glass fusing and other projects. Paint Bar visitors can purchase paint, fabric, banner paper, textile ink, stained glass material, jewelry making supplies and clothing for silk screens. Special instruction in such areas as silk screen and tie dye designs are offered for $5.00 per session (plus supplies). Also available are a projection room, an overhead and opaque projector, an Art-O-Graph and sewing machines.
