Four Session Workshops

Ceramics for Beginners
Tuesdays & Wednesdays, June 17 - June 25, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
This workshop covers the construction and wheel throwing of bowls, cups and more. Participants will finish their pieces by glazing and firing them.
Cost: $25.00 SIU Students, $35.00 Public (materials extra). Class maximum 8. Ages 12 & up

Woodworking for Beginners
Mondays, July 7 - July 28, 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Learn to use tools safely in the wood shop as you build a project. Gain experience with both hand and stationary tools. Table saw, joiner, drill press, band saw, and more will be covered. This class includes a semester pass to the wood shop.
Cost: $25.00 SIU Students, $35.00 Public. Ages 18 & up

Dig Local Clay & Make Pottery
Mondays & Wednesdays, July 9 - July 21, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Dig some of the best earthenware clay found right here in Southern Illinois. Learn how to process, make things, and fire the clay. A brief history of the clay works in this area will also be discussed. Car Pooling to local site required.
Cost: $25.00 SIU Students, $35.00 Public. Ages 14 & up.

Drawing
Tuesdays & Thursdays, July 15 - 24, 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
This class will learn perspective, shading, contour, composition, and other techniques.
Cost $40.00 (materials included). Ages 10 to 14


Three Session Workshops

Kid’s Ceramics
Tuesdays & Thursdays, June 10 - 17, 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Kids learn hand building and wheel throwing techniques, while creating pieces to be decorated, glazed and fired. Make cups, bowls, plates, wind chimes, and more. Cost $40.00 (materials included). Ages 7 - 12

Knitting for Beginners
Wednesday through Friday, June 11 - 13, 1pm - 3pm
Start a life long hobby when you learn to knit a scarf. This is an entry level knitting course.
Cost: $25.00 (materials included). Class minimum 3, maximum 12. Ages 7-12

Ceramic Drum Making
Mondays, June 16 - June 30, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Build a small drum by hand or throw on the potter’s wheel. Glaze and stretch the rawhide head and you are ready to jam. These drums are brighter than any other type.
Cost: $30.00 SIUC Students, $35.00 Public (materials included). Class minimum 4, maximum 8. Ages 12 & up

Fusing Glass
Tuesdays, July 8 - July 22, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Slump and fuse compatible stained glass into simple shapes. Shallow bowls, flat patterns and other simple glass designs are made with cold glass that is heated to its melting point and fused together.
Cost: $25.00 SIU Students, $35.00 Public (materials extra). Ages 12 and up

Long BoardLong Board - Skate Board 
Tuesdays & Wednesdays, July 9 - July 16, 5 pm - 7 pm
Laminate, shape, sand, decorate, and finish your own long board.
Cost: $30.00 (materials included). Ages 18 & up.
This is for the board only, no trucks.


TWO SESSION WORKSHOPS

Digital Photography
Wednesdays, July 16 & 23, 6pm - 8pm
Photography meets Photoshop.  Learn how use your digital camera. Down load your picture onto a computer and print or post your picture.
Cost: $20.00 SIU Students, $30.00 Public. Class minimum 5, maximum 15.

ONE DAY WORKSHOP

Hanging Tomato Plant.
Tuesday, June 24, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Don’t have room for a garden? Then make a hanging garden. This workshop will teach you how to make an upside down hanging vegetable garden using soil, cloth, a tomato plant and a bucket.
Cost: $25.00 (materials included). Ages 12 & up

Walk – in Family night
Monday, June 30, 5 pm – 8:30 pm
Choose from a variety of craft projects on our walk-in activities list or try something different like wax hands, architectural wood sculpture, or silver rings from our group activities list. Prices begin at $2.00 and up. All ages welcome.

Glass BeadsGlass Bead Making
Section 1: Tuesday, July 1, 10:30 am – 4 pm
Section 2: Thursday, July 17, 10:30 am – 4 pm
This workshop teaches the same skills taught in one day as those in the five week class. Participants will make beautiful one-of-a-kind beads. Torches, colorful glass rods, and a little skill make this a fun and exciting craft. Beads can then be used to make necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry.
Cost: $25.00 SIUC Students, $35.00 Public (materials extra). Class minimum 6, maximum 12. Ages 14 & up.

Didgeridoo from PVC Pipe
Wednesday, July 2, 6 pm – 8 pm
This one day workshop features a fast and simple method for making an instrument. Easy to make and fun to play, you can decorate it in your own style. We even teach you how to play it!
Cost: $20.00 (materials included). Ages 12 & up

ABC’s of Bead Stringing & More
Section 1: Wednesday, July 2, 1 pm – 5 pm  
Section 2: Friday, July 18, 1 pm -5 pm
If you have a collection of beads, old jewelry, or beads from a beginning bead making class and have no idea what to do with them, then this class is for you!  You will learn basic beading and simple wire working techniques, including crimping. Students should supply their own beads.
Cost: $25.00 SIUC Students, $35.00 Public. Class minimum 6, maximum 12.
Ages 14 & up.

Make an Ice Cream Bowl Walk-in
10 am – 9 pm daily
Try your hand at making a ceramic bowl using various techniques. Instructional PowerPoint is provided.
Walk-in between June 9 and June 25 so your bowl will be ready for the blackberry event below.
Cost: $3.50 (includes 2.5 lbs. of clay). All ages welcome.

Blackberry Picking and Ice Cream
Section 1: Monday July 14th, 10:30pm – 12:30pm
Section 2: Friday July 18th, 2:30pm – 4:30pm
Bring your handcrafted bowl and join us for a guided search for wild blackberries on the SIUC campus. After the picking is done, you will return to the Student Center for a special treat of black berries over ice cream in your one-of-a-kind bowl.
Participants will have to provide their own rides to the site on campus. Wear long sleeves, hats, long pants, and bug spray. Cost: $5.00. All ages welcome.

Private Lessons

Cost: $10.00 per half hour (When teachers are available)

  1. Voice:  Learn to develop your natural talent.  Sing, listen, and learn from popular music.  Beginning levels.
  2. Piano:  Learn to read music and play the piano.  Private lessons are for beginning and intermediate level participants.
  3. Guitar:  These lessons are designed for those who prefer not to meet in a classroom situation or are advanced beyond the beginning level.
  4. Beginning Violin Lsesons

How to Register:

Registration may be made by phone, mail, or in person at the Student Center Craft Shop. The Craft Shop accepts major credit cards, checks, Debit Dawg, and cash. Please make checks payable to SIUC, include the application in this brochure or a note with your name, address, phone number, class title, section, and the number of participants. Fee must be paid one week prior to the class to ensure a spot in the class.


Refund Policy

Due to the expenses involved in course planning, no refunds will be granted within one week of the workshop start date. Dates and times are subject to change.
