Women's Night Safety Transit

Women's Night Safety Transit was established as a courtesy service in the spring of 1980 to provide a safe non-threatening means of transportation for eligible students both on and off campus.

Who can ride Women's Night Safety Transit?

Women's Night Safety Transit services are available to all currently enrolled female students.

What are the hours of operation?

Women's Night Safety Transit hours of operation are Sunday through Friday 6:00 pm to 12:00 am, but will stop accepting calls after 11:30 pm (7:00 pm-12:00 am during daylight saving time). Women's Night Safety Transit does not operate during the summer. Services may be cancelled due to hazardous weather. For further information phone 618.536.4636.

Does it cost anything to ride transit?

No. Women's Night Safety Transit is funded entirely by student fees.

Will transit provide a ride to any location in town?

No. Rides are provided for students from an off campus home address to a campus location and vice versa. Women's Night Safety Transit will not provide rides to local businesses.

Are there any exceptions to the location restriction?

Due to Morris library's late night hours, Women's Night Safety Transit will provide rides from the library to on campus housing.

What are the boundaries for this service?

    Ridership boundaries are:

  • To the North: Carbondale Mobile Homes
  • To the South: Town and Country Mobile Homes
  • To the West: Tower Road
  • To the East: Giant City Blacktop Road

Can my children or family ride?

No. The service is available to eligible female students only.

What is the average wait for a ride?

The average wait for a ride is 20-25 minutes depending upon weather conditions and the number of incoming calls.

How long will the Women's Night Safety Transit car wait for me if I am not at the designated location?

Vehicles will wait a maximum of 3 minutes. Two no-shows will result in being banned from the service.

Does Women's Night Safety Transit operate during semester breaks?

No. Women's Night Safety Transit does not run during break periods. Following school breaks, the service will resume operation on the first day of class (Monday). If a holiday is on a Monday, Women's Night Safety Transit will be closed Sunday and Monday night.

Can I call ahead for a ride?

No. Cars are dispatched in the order in which calls are received.

What are my responsibilities as a rider?

Due to signal interference with Women's Night Safety Transit dispatch equipment, riders are asked to refrain from using their cell phones. Also in an effort to keep the vehicles clean, food and drink are prohibited.

Are there alternate forms of transportation available if Women's Night Safety Transit does not fit into my schedule?

Yes. Yellow Cab taxi service (618.457.2181) and Jackson County Mass Transit (618.549.0304). Also Saluki Express provides routes throughout the Campus and Carbondale community. The last run is at 12:44 am Monday -Thursday, and Friday - Saturday at 3:44 am. Bus schedules are available at the Information Center or ID office in the Student Center.
